Vitals

Activity Monitor that groups processes by their parent app

Visit

Vitals is a Mac system monitor that shows apps instead of processes, so Google Chrome appears as one row with one memory figure instead of 96 helper processes you have to add up yourself. It keeps 30 days of history for every metric, alerts you when an app misbehaves, groups dev servers by project, and lives in the menu bar with every readout configurable. No subscription, one payment for life. Built by Atta Ur Rehman Shah.

Activity Monitor tells you a thousand processes are running, and leaves you to figure out which app is using the memory. Vitals answers the question you actually asked.

The dev server grouping is what convinced me to keep it installed. I run half a dozen node processes across different projects, and Activity Monitor lists them all as node with no indication of which one belongs to which folder. Vitals groups them by project and tells me which ones have been idle for three days. The 30-day history is the other part I use constantly: when the Mac slows down, I can see what happened while I was away instead of guessing.

Chrome as one row instead of 96 helpers is exactly what I needed. I live in Ads Manager and Business Suite tabs all day and never know which one is cooking my MacBook. Can Vitals go one level deeper and show which tab is the problem, or is the app level as far as it goes? Also, a one-time payment in 2026 is a nice surprise.
