Rare internal memos and forgotten books, free to read
#2 of the day · 18 Oct 2026
Read Rare is a shelf of the rarest tech docs and books you've probably never read: internal memos, leaked handbooks and forgotten books from the people who built Apple, Intel, Google, Netflix and Facebook. Think the Word for Windows postmortem, the Apple Marketing Philosophy, the Netflix culture deck and out-of-print founder books. Every one links to a place where it is free to read or borrow, and anyone can submit a rare one. Made by Sahil Patel.

Most of what explains how great companies actually worked was never published as a book, it was a memo someone forwarded. Read Rare collects those documents on one shelf, with a link to where each can be read for free. A good tab to keep open for the next long flight. sahilpatel200350@gmail.com is the address behind the "Submit a rare one" link on https://readrare.com (Sahil Patel, whose X account @sahilypatel is linked from the site).

The Apple Marketing Philosophy is one of those things I've seen quoted a hundred times and never actually read, so this went straight into my open tabs. Half of my job is explaining to small business owners why the boring basics matter, and an old memo makes that point better than any blog post I could send them. Is there a way to filter by topic, like marketing versus engineering? And which document has surprised people the most so far?
