HotShot
Capture, mark up, and finish a shot in one Mac menu-bar app.
#2 of the day · 15 Sep 2026
HotShot is a Mac menu-bar app for the trip from capture to a finished image. It shoots the screen, a window, a dragged region, a live web page, or a recording, then lets you mark it up and drop it onto a backdrop with padding, rounded corners and a shadow. Recordings can be trimmed, cropped and given zoom spans that follow the pointer; a link can be copied after the file lands in your own iCloud, Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive. Needs macOS 15 Sequoia.

I keep three apps open for one screenshot: capture, annotate, then something else to put it on a backdrop. HotShot does the whole trip from the menu bar — screen, window, region, even a live page — and the recording side has the same compose step.
I have not used it in anger yet. The Mac App Store build is missing a few staging tricks the direct build has; worth knowing before you pick a store.
