Enigma is a browser-based, historically accurate, working 3D model of an Enigma machine. The project started after watching the excellent Veritasium video on the Enigma machine and the full animation by Jared Owen, but still being confused on how the inner mechanics work. Astra was used to build out the inner components through a combination of reference images, hundreds of extremely detailed prompts, and custom inspection tools to ensure every part is sized and positioned in a historically accurate way. Still a work in progress. The daily plugboard settings, rotor order, ring settings, and how a message is transmitted are all shown and explained. Type on your keyboard to press keys on the Enigma machine. The lamp letters light up as you type. Morse key teaching instruments represent the separate radio transmission step. Morse plays at 12 words per minute. The encrypted message and recovered message are both displayed. It works by showing the electrical path through rotors, plugboard, and reflector as you type. Each component is explained with historical context. Built entirely in the browser with modern web technologies. No install needed. Educational and interactive. Shows the mechanics that Turing and the Bletchley Park team had to reverse-engineer.
